Winter Battery Checklist

Rain in the Tri-State... It has been going off and on all month now. With the holidays wrapping up it may be time to take a look at your battery. You see it can be hard to find someone to give you a jump start normally but if you are caught when it is cold and wet outside it is just that much harder to find someone who is willing to help out.

We recommend checking the cable connections to be sure they are corrosion free and connected securely. Making sure the battery hold down is snug to alleviate any unnecessary vibration to the battery. Checking the fluid levels in the battery. If this seems to be a bit of work, or you just don't want to get your hands dirty you can always bring your car / truck / van down to Interstate Batteries of Lake Havasu where testing your battery and checking all of those items listed above are FREE OF CHARGE!!!

You can Enjoy the Warm, Dry waiting room while we go through and make sure you will be ready for the winter season.

Havasu Hitgirls

Interstate Batteries of Lake Havasu is proud to be sponsoring the inaugural bout for the Women's Roller Derby League the "Havasu Hitgirls". This is a great sport for women to stay active and have a great time!

It is great to be able to get out and have a good time with women who are active in the community. They have held several fundraisers to pay for their supplies, skates, insurance, and so on for this event.

On their own dime they have been working for almost a year so that they would be ready. This goes well beyond just doing fundraising. They have been practicing 2 - 3 times a week, traveling to away events to get insight, attending conventions, etc... When a group is so interested in putting in the time needed to get the ball rolling it is exciting to see their first event!

When and Where?
December 18th from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Sara Park Hocky Rink

This should be a fun filled family event. Bring the kids and see what these gals have been up to. Their is going to be a food vendor there so you can have a late lunch / early dinner with the kids. For FREE ADMISSION you can bring any non-perishable food / household items which will be donated to the Interagency’s Women’s Shelter .

To stay up to date on what they are doing visit their web page at http://www.havasurollerderby.com/

Thanksgiving

In an effort to give our employees time to share with their families this Thanksgiving we will be closed on 11/25/2010 and will have limited staffing on 11/26/10.

As Thanksgiving approaches we have some thoughts we would like to share. Thanksgiving is the time to feel gratitude for all the good things in life. It is a time to acknowledge the good deeds of fellowmen and be thankful. Thanksgiving thoughts of people give us an insight as to what people feel about it.

We are living in trying times right now. Right now someone’s child is hungry, body wracked with pain, or has no idea where they and their family will find a place to sleep. For anyone in these or any another difficult situation we pray for your wellbeing. If this is your situation take a few minutes on Thanksgiving Day, step outside your situation and just "be". Find something, no matter how small, to be thankful for because in giving thanks, you will be lightening your load, even if for only a moment.

I am reminded of a quote from Mother Teresa:

People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self- centered;
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of having selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, others may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do it anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you've got anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;
It never was between you and them . . . anyway.
We have been truly blessed at Interstate Batteries and are grateful to all of our dealers, customers, and suppliers who help us succeed. We wish you a fruitful and blessed Thanksgiving Day.

Meet the Team

Meet the Intestate Battery Team. We have been making improvments to our office but this does not mean we have changed our staff. We know that our staff is a critical component to our success in being able to deliver outstanding service to our customers.

The only staff changes were do to personal reasons. Garry the old Branch manager still is part of the Interstate Battery Family working in Las Vegas now to be closer to family. Jessica moved to Phoenix but she has moved there and back several times in the past few years. You never know she may still come back...

So here is the team we are working with right now...

Jeffrey Rands
General Manager

Jeff has been involved with batteries since he was a small child. His father used to own the Mohave County territory as well as the Las Vegas market. When his father asked if he was interested in moving to Lake Havasu and taking on the family business he was very excited. He thinks that Lake Havasu is a beautiful place to live, has friendly people, and enjoys the community. He comes to the team with an MBA and a drive to focus on the service delivered to our customers.

Brenda Rands
Office Manager

Brenda has worked in several different industries ranging from the US Army to telecommunications. She was very excided about the opportunity to work at Interstate Batteries as our office manager. She handles the daily routing of calls, dispatch management, and clerical duties. You will probably reach her if you give us a call. She is very friendly and eager to assist you on your battery needs.

Ken
Route Sales Manager

Ken has been with Interstate Batteries for over 5 years now. He is part of the family. Typically he is not at the office and is out in the field with our route truck servicing customers all over the Mohave County. He has a drive to make sure the customer has the right battery for their application and will work day and night to make sure we have it for our customers.

Mike
Service Technician

Mike has been in this building since it was the old Lightning Battery building. You probably already know him as he has been here forever. He has a great background working with alternators, starters, and batteries. He usually will be doing the installations here and is able to test other aspects of your electrical system. He is very good at installing in RV’s, Gem Carts, Golf Carts, and so on.

Travis
Service Technician

Travis is the newest member to our team. He comes with 2 years of battery experience in California so he knows the drill. With this background it made him a great addition to the team. He is able to do installations, deliver batteries, and handle any customer questions which come up.

Frank
(CGO) Chief Greeting Officer

Frank has been with the team since birth. He was excited to move to Lake Havasu as well since this means he can go to the office almost everyday. He occasionally will take a day off when Brenda is not in the office and make sure she is doing ok. He likes to greet everyone as they come in and always wants to play. He is a great addition to the team reminding us to not take life to seriously.

We look forward to seeing you at our shop or giving us a call.

New Route Truck

Interstate Batteries wants to Serve you Better!

So we are pushing hard to have better service. To be able to take care of all of our customers we decided to get an additional truck for our fleet. This Ford 550 Super Duty truck seemed to be the right fit. It is able to hold enough batteries that we are able to do hot shot service off of it, smaller route service, and works when we have our larger route truck down for scheduled maintenance.

We are excited to get this truck in full service. After only 2 test runs on routes it seems to fit the bill. We are very conscious of the fact that you can not wait for a battery. With this addition we are better able to serve your needs and get batteries out to you more effectively. This will also help with making sure we are able to rotate batteries. By rotating batteries we are able to ensure a fresh battery is installed every time! Someone may ask why this matters. Well if a battery sits on the shelf it will slowly discharge. Batteries also "like" to be used. What that means is the chemical reaction in the battery from use actually will help it last longer. So with us making sure they are fresh and charged up it simulates usage to the battery making sure when it is installed your vehicle will get the top quality product that we are selling.

Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Lock-up

Please Help Me!!! I have been arrested and will be put in jail for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Lock-up. Don’t even bother asking what crime I have committed – it’s not really that important. I just have to raise my bail of $1,600 before the Lock-Up and they will go easy on me, but I need your financial assistance to post my bond.

Go to this link to help me stay out of Jail.
https://www.joinmda.org/lakehavasulu2010/ibslh

Your 100% tax-deductible donation will help MDA continue research into the cause and the possible cure of the 43 neuromuscular diseases they cover. Your support of the MDA Lock-Up will also help MDA provide medical equipment, clinic visits, support groups and a magical week of MDA Summer Camp for the families served by the Association in our local area.

Labor Day

While we are enjoying picnics, parades, pool parties, and time on the lake lets take a moment to remember the contributions workers have make to strengthen the prosperity and well-being of America. In our appreciation for all that our workers do for Interstate Batteries we will be closed on Monday September 6, 2010. We want to give our employees time to relax from the heat of the summer and spend time with their loved ones.

My wife and I are planning on BBQ?ing and enjoying time together. Although this is not out grill we do enjoy any BBQ that requires a battery to start it. We wish you the best this Holliday weekend and remember to be safe and have fun.

Jump Start Box

We have heard this story several times so we wanted to share some insight to you on how to save some big bucks.

I have had troubles with batteries in the past so I wanted to get me a backup solution. I went out and bought a Jumpstart Box. You know for when the battery fails I can connect it up and jump start my vehicle. So the last time I bought a battery I decided today is the day. I went out and picked up one right then and put it in the trunk for safe keeping. Now when the battery died 2 years later the box didn’t work and now I have to buy a new one…

Well this is a fairly common story. There are a few things that can be done. The first is to make sure the battery jump box has been charged. It has a gel battery in it and over time it will discharge. They typically will come with an adaptor to plug into the wall. If you do that once a month to make sure it is charged up it will be ready when you need it. They will usually come with a testing procedure as well. This way you know if it will work even if it is charged. Now if it ends up failing the test don’t worry. You can just replace the battery inside the box. We are able to do it for you and only charge for the battery…

So we claimed in the beginning that this will save you money and time…

• Not getting a tow $50 - $100
• Keeping your charger ready will save you time when you need it
• Replacing the battery not the charger $50 - $60

Interstate Batteries has access to over 16,000 batteries. We have a motto here “We have it, Find it, or build it”. This means you are able to come to us with any battery issue and we can help you resolve it.

18 Days till Race Season!!!

With only 18 days left before the beginning of the Lake Havasu Race season Interstate is getting ready. We are in the final stages of getting our “Team Interstate” shirts out to our racers and logo’s for our cars. We are very excited about going out and supporting the drivers and making sure we have fun with it as well. We spent some time at Get it in Gear talking with the owner about his preparations for the race. While we were there another driver dropped by to talk about the upcoming season.

This should be a good year at the race track and Interstate is proud to be a part of this. We know that it provides enjoyment for the community as well as is a great place to showcase what our batteies are capable of doing. With a higher compression engine it will require more Cold Cranking Amps (CCA’s) and Interstate Batteries is up to the test. Most of the cars we are sponsoring are running Optima batteries (one of our lines) to ensure they will get the power required to go when they say “Gentlemen start your engines!”

We are looking forward to our team “Team Interstate” doing well and providing our community with LOADS of enjoyment this 2010 / 2011 season!

Marine Batteries

Here is an article from boats.com featuring Interstate Batteries. Great advice in getting the most out of your marine batteries especially since we play in the water here often. Make sure your batteries are up to the task before you are on the ramp. This quick check will make it a much smoother trip. Remember you can get free battery tests at Interstate Batteries and most of the authorized Interstate Battery Dealers.

Neglect your boat’s battery, and your next fishing trip could end right at the launch ramp.

Issues related to the electrical system of the boat now rank right behind bad fuel as the most-common reason a modern outboard won’t start, according to service experts, and it all starts at the battery.

A marine deep-cycle battery can also be used as a starting battery if it meets the cold cranking amps specification of the outboard motor.

“Poor battery installation, from loose connections at the posts to poor grounds and over-extended battery cables, are the issues I see most-frequently,” says David Greenwood, Suzuki Marine application manager. “Boat owners need to regularly inspect the battery and all key connections, and make sure their motor is rigged to factory specifications.”

Begin by making sure your boat has the right battery – a marine battery. Marine batteries come in two types. A marine starting battery is intended to start the engine and to power accessories such as lights, electronics, livewell pumps and aerators, and the radio. A marine deep-cycle battery is designed to power trolling motors and can withstand frequent deep discharges.

An automobile starting battery might work to get your motor running, but it’s a poor substitute for a marine cranking battery, according to Gale Kimbrough, technical services manager at Interstate Batteries.

“All batteries are designed for a specific application,” Kimbrough says. “A marine starting battery has thicker plates and more robust internal construction than an automobile battery so that it can withstand the vibration and pounding of the marine environment and take a much deeper discharge.”

Both an automobile and a marine starting battery will deliver the spike of power required to operate a starter motor. But in a boat, that battery also often powers accessories like aerators and fish locators when the engine, and thus the charging system, are turned off. Frequent deep discharge activity will greatly shorten the life of an automobile battery. Because it has thicker plates, the marine battery can take the discharge and bounce back.

In this regard, the marine starting battery is sort of a hybrid of a standard starting battery and a deep-cycle battery. The deep-cycle battery has even larger, thicker plates than a starting battery and is designed to be used down to 25 percent of its complete charge (75 percent state of charge), and then recharged, over and over again. Like the marine starting battery, a marine deep-cycle battery is built to survive the pounding it may take when mounted below the bow of a bass boat, for example.

While its case looks about the same as an automotive battery, a marine cranking battery is more robust internally and will withstand a marine duty cycle that may include deeper discharge.

Larger fishing boats often carry two starting batteries, one dedicated to starting the engine, and the other to running accessories, often called the “house” battery. An isolator in the charging system then sends charging power from the engine alternator or an on-board battery charger to the battery most discharged. Properly rigged, a dual-battery system should keep accessories from draining the starting battery, which could leave the boat stranded.

While Kimbrough says that today’s marine batteries are virtually maintenance-free, it does pay to give your batteries a little attention during the season.

“You want to keep the top of the battery clean,” says Kimbrough. “An accumulation of dirt and vented battery electrolyte can allow a very low level of current to flow between the positive and negative posts, resulting in quicker discharge and corrosion on the posts. You can clean the battery top with a soda wash, a 50/50 mixture of baking soda and water in a spray bottle. The soda neutralizes the acid. Spray it on, rinse, and then wipe the battery dry. There are also commercial cleaners available.”

Batteries should always be stored with a full charge, whether it’s for the off-season or just for a few weeks of inactivity.

“If the battery sits in a discharged state, sulfation will form on the plates, and it may never be able to regain a full charge again,” says Kimbrough. “If you have power available, one of the chargers with an electronic automatic shut-off circuit will maintain a full charge without over-charging the batteries during long-term storage.”

Batteries in long-term storage can be drawn down by the “parasitic” draw of electronic accessories, which often require a small current flow to maintain an internal memory.

“An electronic device that draws just 50 milliamps will draw 1.2 amp hours in a day, and 24 ampere hours in 20 days,” said Kimbrough. “That’s 24 percent of the charge of a 100 amp hour battery.”

A battery switch can be used to cut off current flow from the starting battery during storage, protecting it from parasitic drain.

Finally, you want to make sure the battery is securely mounted in the boat and rigged correctly to the motor. The best battery mount, according to Greenwood, is the type of tray that locks the battery with top bracket secured with a pair of stout bolts.

A bolt-down tray like this one from Moeller Marine is the best way to keep a boat battery secured in the roughest seas.

“Too often I see these flimsy plastic battery boxes, or even just a nylon strap that threads through a pair of small plastic brackets, attached to the boat with just a couple of small screws,” says Greenwood. “You want that base screwed or bolted to solid structure in the boat, and the battery held down with more than a strap.”

Greenwood also sees trouble when too many cables are secured to the positive battery post with a wing nut – he suggests replacing the wing nut with a Nyloc lock-nut that won’t come loose and cause a bad connection.

Finally, make sure the battery cables are as specified by the engine manufacturer.

“I often see battery leads that are too long when a boat builder tries to place the batteries forward in the boat, such as within a center console,” says Greenwood. “There may be a poor splice to the cables that come with the outboard motor. Sometimes the ends are just bent together and wrapped with tape, and they can come loose or get corroded. If the battery cables are going to make a long run, they need to be the correct gauge so excessive resistance does not cause a voltage drop.”

Correct installation and a little maintenance will keep marine batteries performing at peak power, ready to start your motor at the turn of a key.

Heat Kills Batteries

Interstate Batteries of Lake Havasu wants to help where it can. Battery maintenance will go a long way in preventing an inconvenient breakdown in the desert.

Did you know that more automobile batteries fail in Summer than in Winter? Summer heat is actually harder on a battery than winter cold. With record heat sweeping across the country, Interstate Batteries encourages motorists to protect and care for that part of the vehicle a driver depends on the most every day.

"The corrosion factor within a battery is accelerated by extreme temperatures, especially heat," said Interstate Batteries Technical Service Manager Gale Kimbrough. "Battery Temperatures under the hood of a car can reach 175 to 200 degrees in extreme heat conditions. This is why it is very important for motorists to take the necessary precautions of having their vehicle battery checked on a regular basis."

Interstate Batteries has some helpful guidelines to follow when caring for your automobile battery:

1. When working with your battery, always wear protective eyewear, remove all jewelry and wear long sleeves to protect your arms from an explosion of battery acid.
2. Do a visual inspection to see if the battery case is showing signs of extreme bulging, cracked or leaking. If it is, it’s time to replace it.
3. Clean up the connections by removing any corrosion, lead oxidation, paint or rust from the top of the battery with a scouring pad or brass brush. Be sure to brush the corrosion away from you.
4. If your battery has removable filler caps, open the caps and check the water level in each cell.
5. Make sure the plates are at least half covered. This prevents sulfation and reduces the possibility of an internal battery explosion.
6. If the water level is low, add distilled water (avoid tap water) until the plates are covered.
7. Avoid overfilling, especially in hot weather, because the heat can cause the solution inside to expand and overflow.
8. Have your battery and electrical system professionally tested every three to six months and especially prior to heading out on a trip.

Interstate Sponsors Local Race Cars

Interstate Batteries is sponsoring local Lake Havasu Race Cars! My wife and I went to the races at the Havasu 95 Speedway at the end of the 2009 / 2010 season. It was so much fun we wanted to be more involved. We reached out to a few of the drivers and were fortunate enough to find some that were looking for sponsors. We are going to be headlining on 8+ of the cars.

So why do we want to sponsor race cars? Interstate Batteries has had a very long history of sponsoring NASCAR and found it was a great way to reach out to our customers. We think that this will be similar in our own community. (Ok the sales pitch is done now).

The other side is Interstate Batteries wants to give back to the local community. There are so many different ways to do this but why not go with something that just makes sense given our companies history. After talking with the drivers and getting a better understanding of the actual costs involved with driving a car we quickly realized that even with several great sponsors they still carry the majority of the financial load. They work hard all year mostly for our enjoyment so why not give back to the folks working in our community who bring us this great sport.

So who are we sponsoring?

Car Driver
2      Scott
6      Chris
6      Flor
7      Joes
12    William
13    Mark
22    Bob
30    John
95    Jason
95    Ryan
95    Bill

You may have noticed we are sponsoring the powder puff gang as well. Some of the gals that drive are so good they play in the big league with the boys as well. That’s right we are sponsoring the local women as well. My wife and I are huge supporters of women in sports as well and wanted to make sure they get help too!

We are looking forward to our team (Team Interstate) doing well and providing our community with LOADS of enjoyment this 2010 / 2011 season!
